Patient Timeline
The Patient Timeline provides a chronological snapshot of a patient’s entire journey within your clinic. It allows providers to easily view each of the interactions that the patient has had with your clinic for all visits and from all service lines.
- Chronological Mapping: The Timeline operates in a reverse chronological format. This means the most recent events or interactions appear at the top, while the older events are displayed near the bottom. This layout is similar to many popular email and social media platforms.
- Visibility of Appointments: Beyond historical records, the Timeline also displays any scheduled future interactions or appointments. This foresight helps providers prepare to effectively coordinate care between all providers.
Smart Summary Cards
The patient timeline contains “Smart Summary Cards”. Summary Cards in the original emrX have been significantly upgraded in emrXL. Smart Summary Cards are designed to offer a streamlined, user-friendly approach to reviewing patient interactions within the clinic. Smart Summary Cards are located in the patient timeline, which displays all past and upcoming interactions, services, and appointments in a reverse chronological order, ensuring the most recent events are immediately visible.
Summary Cards at a Glance
- Dark Grey Summary Cards:
- What it means: These cards indicate services that are pending or not yet completed.
- Action: By clicking on a Dark Grey card, you can jump straight into the data entry screen for that specific service line.
- Example: Imagine patient Leseli Dudley is scheduled for vital signs to be taken at triage. Until this is done and documented, the card for this service would be Dark Grey.
- Colored Summary Cards:
- What it means: Colored cards indicate services that have been completed.
- Action: Clicking on these will provide a full overview of the documentation associated with that service.
- Example: If patient Leseli Dudley had an visit with the doctor today or even last month, her summary card would be colored, indicating that the service was completed and documented in the patient’s chart.
Maximizing Summary Card Features
- More Details with a Click: Some patient interactions carry lengthy information. For these, a ‘show more’ button is displayed at the bottom of the card. This button reveals any additional details on the card. For example: Often, the lab results summary card contains results from all ordered labs. This takes up a large amount of space. To view the full summary card with all of the details on it, click the “show more” button.
- Today’s Summary Cards are Open: For efficiency, cards related to today’s visit are auto-expanded, ensuring immediate access to the most relevant details. Older visit cards, however, remain collapsed but are easily expandable by clicking the “show more” button.
Ensuring Data Accuracy with Validation Warnings
The Data Validation Warnings are a safeguard against data errors or inaccuracies:
- Spotting Warnings: A warning signal in the top-right corner of a summary card indicates a potential error value that is displayed on the summary card. Further, the data field containing the potential error has a red border to indicate the potential problem. For example, if a patient’s blood sugar level reading appears unusually high, this discrepancy will be visually signaled on the respective card in the upper-right corner. The part of the card that displays the actual blood sugar value will have a red box surrounding it.
- Not all Warnings: The summary card only displays the warning signal for data fields that are displayed on the summary card. There may be additional data fields in the visit documentation that have potential data errors. To look for those potential errors, review the full documentation for the visit by clicking the colored summary card for that visit.
- Customizable Rules: Data specialists at your clinic can adapt these data validation rules for local patient populations. For example: a clinic that has many overweight patients may increase the value of the maximum value allowed for weight.
- Understanding Warnings: When you see a red box surrounding a data field in the summary card, hover over the data field. This action will display the nature of the potential error at the bottom of your screen.
Diving Deeper into Previous Data Entries
If ever there’s a need to analyze historical values of a particular data field:
- Engage with Data: Hover to the desired data field or its label, which will glow purple, and click. For example, by clicking on Leseli Dudley’s hemoglobin count on any summary card, you will see the hemoglobin results from all of her previous visits. This allows you to easily track the trend of the data.
- View Historical Entries: A window will open showcasing all past values of the selected data field.
- Return to Main Screen: After reviewing, simply close the window and get back to the patient’s chart.
Smart Summary Cards in emrXL merge efficiency with depth, making it easier than ever for providers to have a comprehensive, easy-to-navigate view of each patient’s journey.
